With just under 100 WiiWare games (98, to be exact) available for download on Nintendo's Wii Shop Channel it can be a challenge to track down the true cream of the crop. Sure, we've barked out our constant orders internet-wide for everyone to download World of Goo, and Nintendo's own Art Style series has taken off on WiiWare, but after all the scores are settled, and after dozens upon dozens of games have been put through the ringer what titles truly deserve to be added to the list of download greats?
That's where this handy-dandy list comes in. Below you'll find our Top 15 WiiWare Games compilation. Why not 25? Why not 10? It's simple. We cut the list off where it deserves to be cut off. We aren't about to leave off games that deserve recognition as must-download titles, and at the same time we didn't want to overextend the set into titles that may or may not really be the best of the best. We've put our heads together, pitted the best of the best against each other, and these 15 remain.
Check them out in the list below – which is in no particular order, by the way – and get downloading!
World of Goo
Developer: 2D Boy
Genre: Puzzle
Price: 1500 Wii Points
We aren't placing these games in any particular order, but we are putting Wii's best foot forward first. World of Goo released last year and shocked the gaming community is a big way, scoring our Game of the Year award for Wii over games like Smash Bros. Brawl, and even getting a nomination for overall Game of the Year across all of IGN. World of Goo takes the simplicity of building towers, bridges, and oddball contraptions and wrangles it all in with a full-on physics system based around adorable balls of goo. Released only on Steam for PC and WiiWare, this all-pointer game became an instant hit, and is well worth the $15 price tag. Hell, it went toe to toe with the best full priced Wii games of 2008 and won. That says more than one dinky paragraph of text ever could. This game is one of the top titles on the system, and the hands-down king of WiiWare.

LostwindsGames
Developer: Frontier Developments
Genre: Adventure
Price: 800
One of the most unique WiiWare ideas out there was also one of the first titles to hit the Wii Shop Channel. Frontier's Lostwinds blends a traditional adventure formula with full-on pointer control, giving users the power to control the wind with quick drawing techniques. With direct control over the main character and nature itself players will need to solve puzzles, navigate treacherous environments, and create paths. It's a relatively short game at just a few hours long, but the experience is like none other on the platform – be it WiiWare or full-on Wii game. It's relaxing, beautifully designed, and downright fun. Don't miss this Wii-exclusive gem of a title.

Mega Man 9
Developer: Capcom
Genre: Action
Price: 1,000
Retro gaming was reborn last year as Capcom unveiled Mega Man 9 for WiiWare, Xbox Live Arcade, and the PSN. Created to look like a classic 8-bit game, and actually fitting within the original controls and design of Mega Man 2, Mega Man 9 was an instant hit for old school gamers. Not only is the game created entirely from the ground-up to include classic visual glitches and – if users have it enabled – slowdown, but it also brings back classic enemies, and introduces eight new Master Robots for players to master. Additional downloadable content such as another boss, an endless level, a playable Protoman option and plenty of included online leaderboards for speed runs and full game ranks earned this game a spot in many gamer's top 10 of last year. When it comes to WiiWare, you won't find a better action game than Mega Man 9, and what better system to play it on than Nintendo's; home of the Virtual Console?

Art Style: Orbient
Developer: Nintendo
Genre: Puzzle

Wiiware Games Download

Price: 600 Wii Points
As part of Nintendo's own contribution to the WiiWare library the company has kicked off a new series inspired (and sometimes downright taken from) the GBA retro series Bit Generations. Art Style, Nintendo's re-launch, capitalizes on simple concepts that offer a lot of innovation and entertainment for a cheap price. As the current reigning champion in the Art Style franchise, Orbient makes a return from its Game Boy debut, sending players on a puzzling quest of orbit-based travel. Using A and B as gravity and anti-gravity jets you must navigate your ship from planet to planet, using its size and gravitational pull as a way to slingshot from location to location. With only two buttons needed to control the game (and no real Wii-specific controls either) it may seem simple, but dive in and you'll be instantly hooked. Nintendo proves that high concept gaming is still alive and well with this entertaining, innovative, and cheap WiiWare offering.

If you're looking for a fun, cheaper alternative to some of the more expensive WiiWare offerings then XGen's Defend Your Castle is a great place to start. Based on the popular internet flash game, Defend Your Castle comes to WiiWare with improved visuals, hilarious audio (all made from the mouths of mere humans; no machines needed) and a simple pick-up-and-play concept. Using the Wii pointer players must defend their castle (hence the name) from incoming stick figures. While you'll get a whole slew of abilities such as projectile weapons and magic powers the most rewarding (and effective) way of doing it is to just point at a baddie, pick them up, and toss them into the air. The game starts off simple, but ramps up in a big way as hundreds and hundreds begin to attack your castle. When things get rough, call on up to three of your friends and play jump-in/jump-out co-op. For just 500 points this is game is easily a few sittings of simple fun.
