Date

Newer 870s are using an 'RS' serial number prefix. Any idea when Remington switched from 'AB' to 'RS'? I know RS- serial numbers were going on guns at least as early as 2011, but looking at the date intervals of the preceding prefixes, I'm guessing 2011 wasn't the first year. Manufacturer - Remington Model - 1100 Skeet Serial number- M406811X / Date code OU Year of manufacture - July, 1971 Estimated Value Range –see below. For your firearm, the following current values apply (from the Blue Book of Gun Values). Retail prices may be 20% higher. Modern Remington barrels are stamped with a Date/Code, which denotes when it was made. Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington shotgun, on the left side, just forward of the receiver. The first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture.

Remington Owners,
Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.
According to the 'Blue Book of Gun Values', the coding continues as follows:

* the years 1943 though 1953 had double letters: ie, MM = 1943
As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.
