Newer 870s are using an 'RS' serial number prefix. Any idea when Remington switched from 'AB' to 'RS'? I know RS- serial numbers were going on guns at least as early as 2011, but looking at the date intervals of the preceding prefixes, I'm guessing 2011 wasn't the first year. Modern Remington barrels are stamped with a Date/Code, which denotes when it was made. Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington shotgun, on the left side, just forward of the receiver. The first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture.

Call Remington and give them the serial number, they will tell you when it was born, however keep in mind they due make errors. Remington Owners, Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.
